Surprise Me by Sophie Kinsella

Surprise Me by Sophie Kinsella
Genre: Chic Lit
Source: Penguin
Rating: 4/5

Sylive and Dan have a loving marriage, two beautiful girls and it seems that they will have a long future together too... will they be able to survive their mutual surprises? Be prepared to be amazed!

"'How can I be having a midlife crisis?' Dan erupts. 'I'm nowhere near my midlife! Nowhere near! I'm in the bloody foothills!'
'But that's good!' I say emphatically. 'We've got so much time'.
'But what are we going to do with it, Sylvie? How are we going to fill the endless, soulless years of mindless drone work? Where's the joy in our lives?' He looks around the kitchen with a questing gaze, as though it might be in a jar labelled 'joy', next to 'turmeric'."

Sophie Kinsella is an author I can always rely on if I am searching for a funny read, but in this book sometimes the "humour" was a little too forced. I loved the human part, it was touchy and emotive, so a quite contrast book! Maybe that was really the point of the book, because while Sylvie and Dan try to surprise each other, none of the surprises they plan really have a good result... I think they have a bigger problem than having so many years to live. Because that let me say, if you start counting on how many years you will be with your partner, you have a big problem!
While we enjoy some very extravagant surprises (a snake included), we have another subplot that makes the book more real and shows us the real personality of our main characters. Step by step we start seeing how Sylvie and Dan doesn't have the perfect marriage they think and understand that they should change if they really want to spend so many years together.
This had been a quick red, original and sometimes extravagant, but it will be perfect for a sweet read whenever you need one, you know that Sophie Kinsella always entertains even if it's not your favourite book.
Are you planning to surprise your partner, don't try a big surprise, something small will be better! ;)

Dilluns - Català; Ara i Sempre

We are starting a new week, so I thought it would be great to share with you the days of the week! "Dilluns" /dɪllʊːns/
So, Dilluns it will be the same as Monday! Monday for us is not the second day of the week, is the the horrible day we start the week.

I would like to share with you a song that we learn at the school to understand the days of the week, is a traditional Catalan song. This lyric is from the band group Ara va de Bo, but you'll find the same song with minor changes with different bands.

La masovera - Ara va de bo               The Farmer - Ara va de bo
O lai, là, la masovera, la masovera,               O lai, là, the farmer, the farmer,
la masovera se'n va al mercat               the farmer goes to the market
El mercat és el dilluns,               In the market is Monday.
el dilluns en compra llums. Llums!               On Mondays she buys lights. Lights!

Sydney McCall and her sister Katherine are organising an event to allow people adopt some of the kitties they have at the Friendly Paws animal shelter that they own. But everything goes south when the diva that has to promote the event dies during the event, and it seems that someone has killed her! Of course Syd loves to investigate, and she has some personal reasons to discover the truth, one of her best friends could have had a motive!

'I walked into the kitchen and stopped dead when I saw the body, lying squarely in the middle of the floor. "Darn it!" I cried. "Not another one!!"'

This had been a cute case, full of fluffy cats and handsome detectives, we should have more of both in our lives, maybe they would be more interesting! ;)
Of course the case is interesting too, but it was easy to discover how the presume murder was done, the part that was more absorbing was discovering all the subplots around the diva and her need do be always the centre, I am sure this case will get you an interesting inside of the tv backdoor. And let me say that Syd has a little kitty help with the case!
This book has been a quick read, easy to be inside the plot and love the main characters since the beginning, but I am quite worried of the poor cats of the shelter, if there were more killing near them they will need to make therapy, for sure.
I was a little bit down with the part of Syd's life, she has a lot of good friends, but her "boyfriend" and detective seems more like an invisible friend than someone real. I hope we will see more of them together in the next book, Syd needs someone to trust and confide in her life, don't you think?
This is the second book of the "A Cat Rescue Mystery series, but you can read it as standalone.
Ready for a furry case?

If you ever wonder what are the favourite books of a famous writer, I had the pleasure to share with you the top reading list of T. C. LoTemplo, and I am sure you will love all of them! ;)

My Top Five Favorite Books!
Everyone has a list of their favorite books – I’m no exception. While I confess to loving the mystery
genre, and most of my reading is in this area, I think you might be surprised at a few of my choices
So here goes:
  1. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell: The epic love story of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler is numero uno with me! I always identified with the feisty spirit of Scarlett and wanted to bop her over the head when she clung to Ashley like a spoiled child. She realized her mistake in the end, but by then hunky Butler “didn’t’ give a damn” which by today’s standards is a mild statement LOL. Now if I’m being perfectly honest, this book is tied for #1 with #1: The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough: Okay, okay, I might never have known about this book if not for the tv movie with Richard Chamberlain but once I saw the movie I HAD to read the book, and I am so glad I did. The book truly gives more insight into the characters of the wishy-washy Father Ralph and the fieisty Meggie, even more so than the teleseries. If I were stranded on a desert island, it would be a hard choice as to which of my numero uno choices I’d like to have with me!
  2. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: I think this was probably the first book over 200 pages that I read as a child. I always wanted to be Jo, the author! Never Amy or Meg. A true classic in every sense of the word.
  3. Secret in the Old Attic by Carolyn Keene: this was the very first Nancy Drew mystery I ever read (thank the skeleton in the closet on the cover) and the reason I got hooked on mysteries in general. Nancy and I have had a love affair for over 40 years. While she is not the only series book heroine whose adventures I’ve devoured, she’s the one who made the strongest impression. The girl never missed a clue and her hair was always perfect!
  4. Jack and Jill by James Patterson: one of my favorite suspense authors, this was my introduction to Patterson’s no nonsense style of ‘ratchet up the suspense, drop a bomb, and then drop another’. I devoured this as well as all of his Alex Cross novels. Love this man!!!!!
  5. Naked in Death by JD Robb: Actually all of JD Robb’s should be on this list! I started with #1, Naked in Death, and I’ve progessed all the way up to the latest, Brotherhood in Death. I’m looking forward to many more from this author! Eve Dallas is unstoppable – and who wouldn’t want to be married to Roarke?

I’ve also got to give honorable mention to:
  • 1: Any thing by Ann Rule: she was the undisputed queen of true crime fiction, in my estimation!
  • 2: Candice Bergen’s two autobiographies: Love me some Murphy Brown! Enough Said.
  • 3: Salem’s Lot by Stephen King: and not just because I love vampires! This was the very first book of King’s that I ever read and it made me a fan for life! (Of King’s – I was already a fan of vampires thanks to Dark Shadows)
  • 4: Pet Sematery by Stephen King: While it’s true I cannot watch a movie or a tv show or a commercial that shows an animal dying or in distress, for some reason I had no problem devouring this book wherein a cat is run over and then comes back to life – albeit a little more “zombie-ish” than before. One of my favorite SK books, and I have a LOT of them.
  • 5: Loves Music, Loves to Dance by Mary Higgins Clark: the very first MHC book I ever read, and certainly not the last. MHC certainly deserves the title “Queen of Suspense” because she is a past master at dragging it out.
  • 6: Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi: I’m a lover of true crime and I’ve got to confess that I’ve always found the Charles Manson case fascinating. This one had to be on my list of favorites!
Sounds interesting isn't it? Good luck in the Giveaway! ;)

Amor - Català; Ara i Sempre

Today I want to share with you a sweet word, with feelings and personality, Amor. /emɔː/
Amor is the same word as love, or a strong feeling of affection. For me love is something vital in a person's life; loving a person, animal, work... it doesn't matter what or who you love, loving is something difficult to explain with words, but it makes your life better and happier!

I hope you enjoy this poem from the famous writer Paulo Coelho, enjoy!

L'al·lucinogen més potent del planeta es diu amor,  ens fa veure i escoltar coses que no existeixen. -Paulo Coelho

The most powerful hallucinogenic of the planet is called love, it makes us see and listen things that doesn't exist. -Paulo Coelho

Llibertat - Català; Ara i Sempre

In a moment were the Spanish Government has decided that they will try to remove Catalan in the schools, I think it's the moment to really share our problem. Because you can or can't understand why we want a Catalan Republic, but I am sure that no one can understand how a Government would want to eliminate a language because they don't like it.
So, the only thing I can do to fight this, and I know it's not much but is the only way I know to fight, is try to teach everyone who wants to learn something new, a new Catalan word every day. It's not difficult, and for me it's important to share to the world my language, because I am not English, I am not Spanish, I am Catalan.
So today I want to share you the word "Llibertat" /llibəˈrtæːt/

Llibertat is the same as Freedom, and as you know, freedom means the power to determine action without restraint. Something that in Spain doesn't exist right now, sadly...
I would like to share with you this beautiful poem about freedom from a very famous Catalan poet; Joan Margarit.

La Llibertat          The Freedom

La llibertat és la raó de viure,          Freedom is the reason to live,
dèiem, somniadors, d'estudiants.          we said when we were young, dreamers, students.

És la raó dels vells, matisem ara,          Is the reason of the old, we say now
la seva única esperança escèptica.          their only sceptic hope.

La llibertat és un estrany viatge.          The freedom is an strange travel.
Són les places de toros amb cadires          It's the bullring with chairs
damunt la sorra en temps d'eleccions.          on the ground in election times.
És el perill, de matinada, al metro,          It's the danger, during sunrise, on the metro,
són els diaris al final del dia.          it's the newspapers at the end of the day.
La llibertat és fer l'amor als parcs.          Freedom is making love at the parks.
La llibertat és quan comença l'alba          Freedom is when the dawn starts
en un dia de vaga general.          in a day of general strike.
És morir lliure. Són les guerres mèdiques.          Is dying free. Is the Persian war.
Les paraules República i Civil.          Is the words Republic and Civil.
Un rei sortint en tren cap a l'exili.          It's a king leaving into exile by train.
La llibertat és una llibreria.          Freedom is a bookshop.
Anar indocumentat. Són les cançons           Going without papers. They are the songs
de la guerra civil.          of the civil war.
Una forma d'amor, la llibertat.          A way to love, the freedom.

Supra Pens Advert

I have to say that sometimes adverts make me re-think of how I act, this is an example.
This campaign by Supra Pens highlighted examples of renowned geniuses who were not born geniuses but paved their way towards glory by tapping into their passions while honing their skills, conquering the odds in their way towards greatness. In the coming exam season, let's remind our children that they are not defined by their grades.

The Owl Always Hunts At Night by Samuel Bjork - Blog Tour

The Owl Always Hunts At Night by Samuel Bjork
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Source: Transworld Books

This is a turbulent, dark and intriguing book.
A case with roots in the past, a dead body surrounded by feathers... and of course this is just the beginning. In this complex case, the detective Mia Kruger and his partner Holgan Much try to unravel this mystery while they cope with their own personal problems, making the case more suffocating and stressful at the same time.
As we start reading we've been a little overwhelmed by so many characters in this difficult case, but quickly it turns unstoppable and addictive, so don't be afraid.
I was quite surprised with the plot, it's original and complex, and let me say that the killer has a big, big problem...! But it will leave no one indifferent and like me, you will want to read their next case!
This is the second book of the Holger Munch & Mia Kruger, but you can read it as standalone.

Agnes Lüthi will have a quite complicated case to investigate full of possible killers, but just one motive possible, something that could change the watch business... Ready?

“Your call was the best news I’ve had in weeks,” she added. “A few days ago one of my kids accused me of missing the criminals.”
Vincent – her oldest – had phrased it more bluntly: that she liked spending time with the bad guys more than with them. Before she could protest, her youngest son had added that at least she wasn’t a criminal herself. They’d all laughed. It was true, she did miss work. Surely that wasn’t a bad message for the boys? Their father had had a strong work ethic.
Aubry pulled his wrist up and spoke into a microphone, asking a question. He looked a her. “When are you officially back on the job?”

This is a low-paved story, complex and full of characters that will keep you glued to the pages till the last moment. Sometimes the plot was a little too slow and I was a little lost with so many characters, but I was delighted with the original plot and all the layers inside!
Agnes' life has not been easy lately, so she could understand grieving and that when someone passes away with strange circumstances the family needs to know the truth. But, while she is trying to discover the truth she will uncover a few secrets... Because every clue Agnes discovers it goes to the private school were the victim passed away... was he the target or some of the students of the private school? And what are the weird lights that move around the forest at night? Do they have anything to do with the killing? So many secrets!
I have to say I missed a little more of background of the main character, Agnes, the book was too focused on the mystery that it felt a little cold, a human touch. This is the second book of the series of the "Agnes Lüthi Mysteries", so maybe I had to read first the "Swiss Vendetta" to fully understand her...
In the main story we will see first sight how competitive a business could be and that sadly, everyone is ready to kill for a good idea!
Ready for a timed murder?

Interested? Good luck in the Giveaway! ;)
